Laboratory

The Student Life Student Health Services (SLSHS) Laboratory partners with University Reference Laboratory for testing not performed on-site. 

  • Orders from private physicians are accepted weekdays, Monday - Friday, 8am until 1 hour prior to closing
  • No appointment necessary
  • Bring or fax the order prior to arrival to 614-247-4791
  • Make sure the order includes a fax number for the ordering physician and a diagnosis code
  • Test results ordered by a private physician are not available via My BuckMD, requiring the ordering physician to be contacted

Order-It-Yourself (OIY) Testing

  • No appointment or doctor's order required
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Check-in at the patient registration desk and provide payment
  • Give a urine or blood sample in the first-floor laboratory
  • Results will be available 3-5 days after the test via My BuckMD
  • All positive or abnormal results will be reviewed by the SLSHS Medical Director or designee and the patient will be contacted 

Available Tests

  • Anemia Screen (Hemoglobin)
  • Blood Typing (Blood Group and Type) 
  • Diabetes Screen (Hemoglobin A1C)
  • Thyroid Screen (TSH)
  • Sexually-Transmitted Infection (STI) Screens (Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, HIV, Syphilis)
  • Drug Screen (Urine 14-Drug Screen)
  • Pregnancy Screen (Urine)
  • Vitamin D (Vitamin D 25-OH)

Fasting Requirements

Some laboratory tests, such as glucose and cholesterol, require an overnight fast of 8-12 hours.

For the duration of the fast, you MAY NOT:

  • Eat any foods
  • Eat candy, mints, or chew gum
  • Smoke cigarettes
  • Consume any kind of liquid other than water (including coffee, tea, alcohol, and soft drinks) and only consume 2 - 3 cups of water during the fast

You MAY:

  • Brush your teeth
  • Take your medication

 Laboratory Results

  • The Laboratory CANNOT release or interpret test results
  • Most test results are available within 24-48 hours and sent to the medical provider
  • If laboratory tests were ordered by an outside (Non-SLSHS) provider, you will need to contact the provider directly for results
  • For tests ordered by SLSHS providers, a notification will be sent via:
    • Online via My BuckMD, secure message
    • By phone 
    • By appointment
