Parental access to student's health records
Due to federal confidentiality laws, Student Life Student Health Services (SLSHS) is not able to communicate with parents without consent from the patient. This law is designed to protect one's privacy and control how health information is accessed and disclosed.
With your child's permission, SLSHS staff may discuss your child's health concerns or needs with you. Students can sign a release allowing SLSHS staff to discuss specific medical issues. A student can also list a parent as an emergency contact on their Medical History form. If the student seeks care at SLSHS and there is an emergency situation, staff can and will notify the person listed as an emergency contact.
If you want information about non-emergency health care situations, it is best to work through your child, asking them to give us written permission to speak with you about their health concern.
